Understanding the Framework

What Is STIR/SHAKEN & Why Do You Need It?

STIR/SHAKEN is the FCC-mandated caller ID authentication framework for all VoIP and telephone providers operating in the United States. It uses digital certificates to verify that a call's caller ID is legitimate — preventing spoofing and robocall fraud.

Without proper STIR/SHAKEN implementation and your own certificate, your calls will be labeled as "Spam Likely" or blocked entirely by major carriers like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

⚠️ As of September 2025, the FCC requires every voice service provider to have their own STIR/SHAKEN certificate — using a third party's certificate is no longer permitted.

Attestation Levels Explained
A

Full Attestation

The provider has fully verified the caller and their right to use the number. Highest trust level — calls pass through cleanly.

B

Partial Attestation

The provider authenticated the call origin but cannot fully verify the caller's right to the number.

C

Gateway Attestation

The call entered the US network through a gateway from abroad. Lowest trust — often flagged as suspicious.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be in the USA to use this service?

No. You can be based anywhere in the world. We create your US LLC, business address, and registered agent on your behalf. All communication is done remotely.

How long does the entire process take?

Typically 25–35 days from start to finish. Timelines can vary depending on government processing speeds at NECA and Iconectiv, but we work as fast as possible and keep you informed at every stage.

Do I really need my own certificate? Can't I use my upstream carrier's?

As of September 2025, the FCC no longer allows voice service providers to sign calls using a third party's certificate. Every provider must obtain and use their own STIR/SHAKEN certificate.

Will this certificate work with my VoIP platform?

Yes. STIR/SHAKEN certificates are a universal standard and work with all major VoIP platforms including 3CX, Asterisk, FreeSWITCH, Yeastar, Kamailio, and any SIP-based system.

What happens after I receive the certificate?

You upload the certificate to your VoIP platform or authentication service. We provide guidance on deployment and can point you to your STI-CA's technical support for integration assistance.

What documents do I need to provide?

Minimal. We'll need your personal identification and basic business information. We handle all government applications and filings ourselves — no need to interact with the FCC, NECA, or Iconectiv directly.
